The truth about preservatives in skincare
Just about every “natural” or “organic” skincare product you pick up these days has “paraben free” or words to that effect displayed on the label. While the jury is still out on the safety of these preservatives we have made the decision not to include any questionable ingredients in our products including parabens.
That said, preservatives are an essential component of skincare that has water content for the following three reasons: bacteria, yeast and mould. Yuck! Microbial contamination in a product that has been inadequately preserved can pose a significant health risk – more so than any preservative system. Microorganisms are not visible to the naked eye. Just because you can’t see them does not mean they are not there!
Not every preservative is effective against each of the typical 3 microorganisms. This is why it is necessary to have a preservative system that is effective against the full spectrum of microorganisms – yeast, bacteria and mould.
Organic skincare products that make the claim of “preservative free” or that rely on a blend of essential oils as preservatives should be treated the same as perishable food items – kept in the fridge and used within a few days.
We have conducted extensive research to find safe, effective and the most natural as possible preservative systems for our products that provide protection against the full spectrum of microorganisms for the shelf life of the product.
