Skin Tips To Get You Glowing This Festive Season

With the festive season slipping by in a blur of parties, frantic gift shopping and a few too many vinos, you might find yourself dealing with more skin woes than usual. Check out our tips for maintaining a healthy complexion throughout the silly season!

Avoid overindulging in salty food

Steer clear of nibbling on too many salty finger foods (fries, we’re looking at you) that are usually on offer in abundance during the festive season. We benefit from a little salt, but too much sodium leads to water retention. The result? A more bloated looking complexion, especially puffiness in the under-eye area where skin is the thinnest and more susceptible to visible bloating.

Balance out any salt sabotage by sipping plenty of water during the day and between cocktails at the work Christmas party. If that still doesn’t sort out puffy eyes, try a DIY cold chamomile compress. Super easy to make, just put a few chamomile tea bags in hot water to steep. Take them out, put them in the fridge to cool down and then pop them over your eyes for 10 minutes. A good way to fit in a little self-care downtime during the hectic festive season.

Sip on matcha green tea

Matcha green tea contains a type of antioxidant polyphenol called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This tongue twister antioxidant fights cell-damaging free radicals that can lead to visible signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles. Matcha also contains chlorophyll, a gentle detoxing agent that promotes skin health and radiance. Chlorophyll is responsible for matcha’s bright green colour and studies have shown EGCG can even rejuvenate skin cells that are dying. It’s a great tea to sip during the festive season, providing your skin with a little extra support to stay healthy and clear.

Stay sun safe

Outdoor soirées = long, lazy afternoons celebrating in the sun. Sunscreen should be a vital part of your skincare routine every day, especially during the summer festive months.

Nothing accelerates the visible signs of ageing quicker than UV damage not to mention sunburn and a red, shiny face that could rival Mr Claus himself. Oskyn’s dual action moisturiser contains a broad-spectrum natural sunscreen to protect skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

It’s also fortified with antioxidant-rich Australian native extracts, anti-wrinkle peptide and high purity marine extract to rejuvenate the skin and help reduce the visible signs of ageing.

Schedule some early nights

It’s easy to get caught up with a few too many late nights in a row when the holiday season rolls around. Lack of sleep coupled with festive food and drinking is a dull, tired complexion waiting to happen. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing; your skin goes into makeover mode while you’re snoozing to rejuvenate itself in a process called cell mitosis; cell division that renews and repairs skin. While this process does happen regardless of whether you’re asleep or not, getting enough shut-eye allows this process to function at an optimal level.

Don’t pause your fitness routine

With a busy calendar over the festive season, it can be too easy to let your commitment to regular sweat sessions slip. For the sake of your skin (and waistline) try to keep to your routine where possible. Exercise is incredibly beneficial for skin, boosting circulation which nourishes your skin by delivering more oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells. It’s one of the best ways to achieve an all-natural glow.

Ideally, you should exercise without makeup and have a clean towel at hand to wipe away the perspiration and impurities you’re sweating out.

Guzzle H20 to combat the effects of alcohol

It’s probably safe to say many of us overindulge in a few too many drinks during the silly season. Because #christmas. But, we thought you should know what goes on inside while you’re downing your third mojito.

When our bodies metabolise alcohol, a byproduct called acetaldehyde is released which is toxic to body tissues. This leads to drier skin which causes wrinkles and fine lines to look more obvious and don’t be surprised if you wake up with a post-drinking breakout the morning after.

Help combat the effects of alcohol on your skin by sipping water throughout the day, especially in the lead up to a celebratory night out. At the bar, make every second drink a big glass of water and your skin will thank you….so will your head the next morning!

Add a serum to your routine

If you don’t include one already, the festive season is a great time to add a serum to your skincare routine. Serums are potent water-based formulations that deliver more nutrients to your skin than your usual moisturiser. The molecules of serum are tiny, which allows them to deliver goodness deeper into the layers of skin than other face products can. They’re a great way to provide extra support to skin that may be feeling the effects of a little too much festive cheer.

Our Anti-ageing Facial Serum is a blend of certified organic bioactive Native Australian extracts combined with a powerful anti-ageing peptide and marine extract to help reduce the visible signs of ageing.  It is gentle enough to be used around the eye area so you won’t need a separate eye serum to address dryness and wrinkles.

Take care of your skin this party season and you’ll welcome the new year with a glow!
