The Best Anti-Ageing Australian Botanical Ingredients
We’re SO lucky in Australia some incredible botanical ingredients right here in our own backyard. Let’s take a look at some of the best Aussie botanical ingredients for anti-ageing and why we include them all in the Oskyn range!
What exactly IS a botanical ingredient?
A botanical ingredient is a gift straight from Mother Nature herself. It’s a plant extract or oil derived from berries, nuts, herbs, seeds, roots and flowers and the use of natural botanical ingredients for skincare and medicinal purposes date back thousands of years.
Why are botanical ingredients so incredible for skin?
The way our skin ages falls into two categories; intrinsic and extrinsic ageing.
Intrinsic ageing is how our skin ages naturally over time as collagen breakdown and skin cells begin to take longer to naturally regenerate. Extrinsic ageing; also known as photo ageing is caused by exposure to the sun’s UV rays – it’s the kind that can make you look older than your years. Free radical damage also speeds up ageing and are your skin’s worst nightmare.
They’re the harmful molecules from smoke, pollution and ultraviolet light that cling to cells and damage the structure of collagen causing wrinkles, fine lines, and dullness. We are all exposed to free radicals on a daily basis.
Plant ingredients are made up of unique bioactive chemical substances which include those that help the skin regenerate, repair and protect itself including antioxidants, essential fatty acids, pigments, UV screens, and vitamins. They help combat the effects of ageing in a natural but very effective way.
Kakadu Plum – The holy grail of vitamin C
The Kakadu Plum really is an anti-ageing superstar! What makes it so special is its HUGE Vitamin C content. It has the highest concentration of vitamin C, higher than any other natural source in the world.
Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and plays a key role in the synthesis of collagen and daily use helps boost collagen and elastin that help keep your skin firm and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also a fantastic skin brightener and helps even out discolouration and fade hyperpigmentation.
Quandong – Reduces the look of fine lines
It may have a funny sounding name but this fruit doesn’t mess around when it comes to boosting an ageing complexion!
Quandong is an Australian skincare superfood, also known as the bush peach, and is brimming with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Like the Kakadu Plum, it has a potent vitamin C content helping increase the synthesis of collagen and reduce the look of fine lines.
Quandong also contains high levels of the antioxidant rutin, which when paired with Vitamin C, intensifies the antioxidant power.
Botanical anti-ageing dream teams don’t get much better than Quandong and the Kakadu Plum which is why we use both of them in our Anti-ageing Serum.
Also found in this special fruit are vitamin E, folate, magnesium and calcium which together promote cell regeneration, neutralise the effects of damaging free radicals and help skin stay moisturised and supple.
Davidson’s Plum – Free radical fighter and healer
Davidson’s Plum is a potent source of antioxidants that combat one of the main culprits of prematurely ageing skin; those free radicals.
Antioxidants are naturally occurring vitamins and minerals—like vitamins A, C, E, which protect skin by neutralising free radicals before they begin to oxidize. Oxidative stress is the process that leads to those fine lines and wrinkles and the Davidson Plum is packed with antioxidants to combat this process.
But wait, it gets better. The Davidson Plum won’t just help prevent damage, it will also stimulate the skin’s natural healing mechanisms to repair damage already done by free radicals.
You’ll find Davidson’s Plum extract in our Anti-Ageing Facial Serum
Kangaroo Apple – Amino acids for firmer and more even skin tone
The Kangaroo Apple plant contains high levels of amino acids. Amino acids are small but potent skincare heroes, creating and maintaining smooth, healthy, younger-looking skin.
They are part of our bodies natural moisturising factors (NMFs) and are essential for keeping skin hydrated and creating the connective and structural proteins – collagen, fibrinogen, and elastin – that keep skin plump and firm looking.
Kangaroo Apple’s amino acids also encourage exfoliation buffing away the old cells reveal the brighter, fresher ones underneath helping to lighten scars and pigmentation.
You’ll find Kangaroo Apple extract in our Anti-Ageing Facial Cream Cleanser.
Mountain Pepper – An antioxidant wizard
The Mountain Pepper’s big claim to skincare fame is its super antioxidant activity.
The berries of this small Australian native are packed with Anthocyanin, a type of flavonoid, that has been shown to suppress inflammation, help stimulate collagen production to reduce the look of fine lines and act as a potent antioxidant.
The Mountain Pepper contains impressive amounts of B- carotene which is converted into vitamin A in the body.
Vitamin A is a skincare wizard when it comes to warding off the signs of ageing, tackling issues like skin elasticity, unevenness, lines, and wrinkles. It should definitely be part of your skincare routine if you’re over 30 because (sadly!) your collagen production as really begun to wane by this time.
