Benefits Of The Kangaroo Apple Extract For Skin

Promoting skin rejuvenation and hydration, the Kangaroo Apple is a natural skincare ingredient that can help you turn back the clock on those age spots and lines. Let’s take a look at this native ingredient and its powerful skin healing properties.

What is Kangaroo Apple?

It has a fruity sounding name but the Kangaroo Apple isn’t much like an apple at all! It’s actually part of the potato family and grows wild throughout areas of Australia, New Zealand and parts of New Guinea.

This incredible bush medicine has been used for centuries by the Aboriginal people to treat skin and joint ailments thanks to its effective anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Also known as the Poroporo, the plant was given the common name Kangaroo Apple due to the shape of its leaves looking like the footprint of a kangaroo.

The fruits of the Kangaroo Apple can be eaten but only when they are completely ripe, when they become an orange colour. The unripe fruit is green and actually poisonous.

Now we know a little more about this incredible fruit, let’s take a look at the serious skincare benefits Kangaroom Apple extract can deliver to the skin.

Promotes smoother, stronger skin

The Kangaroo Apple plant contains high levels of amino acids. Amino acids are small but potent skincare heroes, creating and maintaining smooth, healthy, younger-looking skin.

They are part of our bodies natural moisturising factors (NMFs) which are a mix of various compounds, including amino acids, that are naturally present in our skin keeping it hydrated.

Amino acids also play a crucial role in creating collagen, fibrinogen, and elastin. These are the connective and structural proteins that keep your skin strong and smooth looking.

The amino acids found in Kangaroo Apple encourage exfoliation of dead skin cells on the surface, buffing away the old cells reveal the brighter, fresher ones underneath.

Exfoliation not only unblocks clogged pore to prevent bacteria build up, it also maximises the benefits of your skincare products. With a layer of dead cells sitting on top of your face, it’s difficult for creams, serums, and lotions to penetrate as deeply as possible into the skin and do their best work!

Contains anti-inflammatory properties

Breakouts, redness and flaky, dry patches messages from your skin that something isn’t right.

Overexposure to UV rays, chemicals in skincare products or environmental allergens can cause your skin to become inflamed and uncomfortable.

Kangaroo Apple extract contains anti-inflammatory properties to soothe irritated, stressed out skin. It also contains powerful wound healing properties, speeding up the return of scarring to healthy skin.

Skin lightening- goodbye age spots!

Age spots and blemishes that won’t budge? This Aussie skin champion helps to lighten and brighten skin.

Age spots are small to medium-sized areas of hyperpigmentation. These darker patches are a natural part of the ageing process (*sigh*) but there are a few lifestyle and environment factors that increase the likelihood of having age spots appear. These include a poor diet, too much UV exposure, smoking, and the level of pollution in our environment.

Usually, you’ll find these spots on exposed areas of skin like your face, back, shoulders, hands, and neck.

The good news is age spots can be prevented and reversed with Kangaroo Apple extract. The fruit’s skin brightening properties get to work lightening dark spots and brightening a dull complexion.

Given all its natural power to help turn back the skin clock, we use Kangaroo Apple extract in our Anti-Ageing Facial Cream Cleanser. A gentle, purifying cleansing and toning lotion with a lovely creamy texture, the cleanser removes makeup, dead skin and surface impurities while softening and firming the skin.

Davidson’s Plum – Skin Benefits of This Australian Superfood

Australia produces some truly incredible botanical skincare ingredients and Davidson’s Plum is one of our greatest homegrown skin heroes. In liquid extract form, this potent ingredient provides significant anti-ageing, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

A dark purple fruit with red flesh, the Davidson’s Plum is a rainforest species found in Queensland and Northern NSW. It’s long been a food source for Indigenous Australians and is often used in jams and sauces. In recent years, studies of this botanical skincare ingredient have revealed the benefits of Davidson’s Plum for topical skincare.

Contains phenolic acids

Phenolic acids (gallic acid and ellagic acid) are naturally occurring acids that act in a similar way to alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA).

They deliver serious skin benefits including an even, brighter skin tone, minimise redness and inflammation and reduce the visibility of sunspots. These acids also help protect skin from potential photoaging; skin damage caused by prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB light.

Packed with anti-ageing antioxidants

Davidson’s Plum is a potent source of antioxidants that combat one of the main culprits of prematurely ageing skin; free radicals.

Free radicals are the harmful particles from smoke, pollution and ultraviolet light that attach themselves to skin cells and weaken the structure of collagen. This means wrinkles and fine lines.

Antioxidants protect skin by neutralising free radicals before they begin to oxidize, the process that leads to wrinkles and lines, to prevent damage.

That’s not all. The antioxidants found in Davidson’s Plum won’t just help prevent damage, they’ll stimulate the skin’s natural healing mechanisms to repair damage already done by free radicals.

Has anti-inflammatory properties

This Aussie botanical contains flavonoid anthocyanin, a known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound.

Inflammation is one of your complexions biggest enemies. It’s the root of many issues that show up on your face and can accelerate skin ageing. There’s no one single culprit to point to for inflammation. Stress, lack of sleep, pollution, smoke, unhealthy diet and too much sun exposure can all lead to skin inflammation.

Davidson’s Plum helps combat the effects of inflammation leading to healthier looking skin and slowing signs of ageing.

Promotes skin elasticity

Collagen and elastin are the two proteins that work together to give your skin its structure (collagen) and allows it to stretch (elastin).

Youthful skin has a plentiful supply of collagen and elastin but as you age, your body produces less of each protein. The result is a gradual loss of bounce and elasticity in your skin.

The active compounds in the Davidson’s Plum stimulate the production of both collagen and elastin.

Strengthens capillaries

A broken capillary looks like a tiny tree branch cluster of red lines close to the skin’s surface, they’ll commonly appear in the under-eye and nose area. Although genetics plays a role,  broken capillaries can be caused by repeated skin trauma like popping pimples, rough scrubbing and exfoliating, windburn and extreme temperatures.

Vitamin C helps repair broken capillaries, minimise redness, and strengthens the capillary walls to prevent future redness. The Davidson Plum contains a high concentration of Vitamin C, in fact, the fruit has 100 times the vitamin C found in oranges.

For all these reasons, we love Davidson’s Plum extract and include it in our award-winning Tinted Facial Moisturiser SPF 15+.

How to turn your skin care routine into self-care

Taking a warm bath with a glass of wine or cosying up with a good book are classic ways to practice self-care, but what about cleansing your face?

Creating a healthy, nourishing ritual with your daily skin care regime can become a valuable self-care experience. Between crazy work commitments and a hectic family schedule, it may seem like taking some ‘me’ time is selfish or a luxury, but the opposite is true.

Self-care is actually essential for your mental and physical wellbeing, just like getting enough sleep and eating a nutritious diet.

Research also shows the habit of practising self-care regularly will help you handle whatever daily challenges life throws at you.

Incorporating self-care into your skincare routine is ideal if your schedule is already jam-packed. If you’re taking the time in the morning on skincare already, why not add a few extra minutes to make it a time to look forward to and enjoy, just for you!

Check out our tips on transforming your skin care routine to a daily self-care ritual.

Slow down and incorporate a facial massage

Slow your routine down. Take a little more time to move through each step and product application mindfully.

As you massage the cleanser into your skin, take some deep breaths in and out, paying attention to the sensation, texture and smell of the product.

Our anti ageing facial cream cleanser is mildly scented with exquisite essential oils Neroli, Ylang Ylang and Roman Chamomile, a luxe treat for your senses.

While applying your moisturising cream or serum try this simple, 90 second facial massage. It helps relieve any jaw tension and refreshes your complexion by improving blood flow to your face.

Slowing down doesn’t mean your routine needs to take hours. Just a few minutes extra will give your mind a break from thinking about the day’s to-do list, instead paying attention and enjoying the process of applying your skin care.

Use natural products

Skin is the body’s largest organ and naturally absorbent. With so many synthetic beauty products full of toxins, layering them onto your face each day means your skin is absorbing a bunch of different chemicals.

These include parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS), mineral oil, lead and aluminium, some of the common toxins found in synthetic skincare.

You can make your skincare routine a more nourishing act of self-care by swapping toxin filled products for natural, organic options.

Just like eating a healthy meal is a way to care for your body so is feeding your skin the nutrients it needs without added chemicals.

Be consistent

The most effective self-care routines are consistent. By building small, regular breaks of ‘me time’ into your daily schedule, self-care becomes habitual and something you can count on to refresh and recharge a busy mind or tired body.

Commit to consistently making your skincare routine a time of self-reflection, enjoyment and mindfulness.

Troubled skin will definitely benefit from a consistent approach to skincare too. While it may take time to try different products and find out what works, once you do, consistency is key when it comes to skincare effectiveness.

You might find as you pay more attention to self-care and your stress levels lower, persistent skin issues will clear up.

Listen to a mindfulness meditation

Listening to a 3 or 4 minute guided mindfulness meditation while you move through your skincare routine is a great way to calm a wandering, frazzled mind.

Download a mindfulness app like Headspace or Calm for inspiration. Calm even has a feature called Daily Calm, a 10-minute mindfulness meditation for each day which could be incorporated in part, or entirely, into your daily skincare routine.

Incorporate an affirmation

All of our internal self-talk, negative or positive, affects how we think about ourselves and the world around us. Much of what we usually say or think about ourselves can be quite negative and this negative self-chatter is the opposite of self-care and self-love!

Every time you wrap up your skincare routine, take a moment to say a simple, positive affirmation out loud to yourself in the mirror.

For example;

I accept and love myself just as I am right now

I am overflowing with joy, vitality and energy — I’m unstoppable!

I acknowledge my own self-worth; my confidence is growing and I am capable

Every day, I am getting better

Such a simple exercise in self-love can help retrain what you think and say about yourself in a way that creates more positive experiences.

Finding what type of self-care works best for you usually takes a little trial and error but we hope these tips inspire you to turn your skincare routine into nourishing ‘me’ time.
